Wellpark Reserve Community Weeding Bee Saturday 18 Jan

Wellpark Reserve Weeding Bee, Saturday 18 January 2025
Wellpark Reserve Weeding Bee, Saturday 18 January 2025

Suzanne Kendrick has organised a community weeding bee at Wellpark Reserve this Saturday 18 January and we need volunteers. Can you help?

Yes, we know it’s January and people are away BUT the weeds have not stopped for a rest in our local park Wellpark Reserve.

Native Plants Smothered

Suzanne says, “The native plants that we planted almost 20 years ago are being smothered by various creepers and nasty vines. Looking down from the bridge you will easily see the problem.”

Willow Back From The Dead

The willow tree that was removed is trying to resurrect itself. New shoots are coming up and rapidly becoming new trees. They are already up to several metres high!

When

Could you join us from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday 18 January 2025 for a community weeding bee?

Where: Wellpark Reserve

Wellpark Reserve (entrances Wellpark Ave, Larchwood Ave, Maxwell Ave).

Urban Ark

Urban Ark will be helping us with some tools and also expert advice on what to do to remove the weeds the correct way.

What to Bring

Most importantly, bring yourself! And a friend or two if you can.

Bring a trowel, secateurs and gardening gloves if you have them.

Also the obvious: Water bottle, hat and sunscreen.

It’s quite boggy down in the stream so gumboots or some boots you don’t mind getting muddy would be the thing.

There’s cutty grass in places so long trousers and sleeves might also be advisable, even if it’s hot.

RSVP

Please RSVP if you can make it: Suzanne Kendrick suzanne.kendrick@gmail.com

Target list

  • Willow saplings – Suzanne’s personal top priority due to the flood mitigation benefit of removing them.
  • Bindweed – to reduce smothering effect so natives can thrive.
  • Umbrella sedge – to free up ecological space which could be naturally occupied by natives.
  • Tradescantia – only if time left. The biocontrol agent (a South American beetle) is present, but some manual clearance around any native seedlings will help to release them so they can grow faster and create more shade, which should help keep the other weeds under control.

See you on Saturday 9:00-11:00 AM!
