Great North Road works are coming! The works, starting January, will make the road better for all users. Here’s what you need to know about the changes and how they might affect you.
When is this happening?
The work starts on 6 January 2025, and will continue until late 2025. But don’t worry – they won’t be working on the whole road at once! Instead, they’re breaking it into smaller sections to make things easier for everyone.
How will they organise the Great North Road works?
The project team has split Great North road works into seven different sections. They’ll only work on two sections at a time. This smart approach means:
- Work will get done faster because teams can focus their efforts
- Only small parts of the road will be affected at once
- Disruption will be limited to specific areas instead of the whole road
Where will they start?
The first changes will happen in two areas:
- Between Northland Street and Elgin Street
- Between Maidstone Street and Ponsonby Road
They chose to work at the busy Ponsonby Road intersection in January and February because there’s less traffic during this time.
Will I still be able to drive on Great North Road?
Yes! There will always be one lane open in each direction. This means you can still drive through, but you might need to slow down and be extra careful around the work areas.
What about parking?
Some changes are coming to parking on Great North Road:
- Some parking spaces will be removed to make room for new bus stops and pedestrian crossings
- They’re planning to add a mix of time-limited and paid parking spaces
- All parking at the top of side roads will stay the same
- The team is still working on the final parking plan and wants to hear what locals think
What about noise and dust?
The construction teams will usually work from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday to Saturday. They know construction can be noisy and dusty, so they’re taking steps to keep everyone comfortable:
- Using quieter equipment when possible
- Spraying water to keep dust down
- Putting up barriers around the noisiest work areas
- Some work will happen at night, but they’ll let nearby residents know ahead of time
How will I know what’s happening?
The project team wants to keep everyone informed:
- They’ll put up signs along the road
- They’ll send letters to nearby homes and businesses
- There will be digital ads and billboards around the area
- A special team will visit local businesses to talk about their needs
- You can sign up for updates by emailing projects@at.govt.nz with “GNR updates” in the subject line
Special events
There will be a dawn blessing ceremony on 13 January to mark the start of the project. If you’re interested in attending, keep an eye out for invitations coming in December.
